Abstract

Introduction: War, as a cause of severe stress, has far-reaching consequences for the mental health, well-being and quality of life of disabled veterans and their families that persist for a long time after the end of the war. The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies in the relationship between emotional dysregulation and quality of life in disabled veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Method: The present study was performed using the correlational method of structural equation modeling. The statistical population included all the disabled veterans in Yasuj, Iran from among whom 200 people were selected through the available sampling method. The instruments utilized for data collection included a coping questionnaire, a quality of life scale and a scale for difficulties in emotion regulation.
Results: The obtained results revealed that there is a negative significant relationship between emotional dysregulation and quality of life. There was also a significant relationship between emotional dysregulation and coping strategies with quality of life. In addition, coping strategies played a mediating role in the relationship between emotional dysregulation and quality of life in disabled veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Discussion: The research model indicated a suitable and acceptable fit with the obtained data, and the assumed structural relationships were confirmed. This model can be used to design a psychological intervention model aimed at reducing the difficulties of emotion regulation and improving effective coping strategies and quality of life in disabled veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
