The effectiveness of parenting based on mindfulness on reducing parenting stress and psychological distress in military mothers with children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to effectiveness of parenting based on mindfulness on parenting stress and psychological distress in mothers with children with ADHD. This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design with control group and follow-up 2 month. The statistical population consisted of all mothers’ children 7-12-year-old with ADHD in Tehran in 2023-2024. In the first stage, using convenience sampling method, 30 mothers were selected and then randomly divided into 2 groups (each group 15 people) were replaced and experimental group underwent parenting based on mindfulness (8 sessions 90 minutes), but the control group received no training and remained in the waiting list. To collect data Conners scale, parenting stress index–short form (PSI-SF) of Abidin (1995) and Kessler psychological distress scale (K-10) of Kessler and et al (2003). Data analysis was performed using SPSS-24 software in two sections: descriptive and inferential (analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni). The results of the study showed that of mindfulness in post-test and follow up had a significant effect on parenting stress and psychological distress in mothers (P<0.05). Based on the results of the present study, it can be said that mindfulness can be used as a treatment method to on parenting stress and psychological distress in mothers with children with ADHD in counseling centers.
